GEORGETOWN FOR THE DAY

Guyana, the easternmost of the three guianas, bordered by Venezuela to the east, Brzail to the south and Suriname to the west, also feels the most 'Caribbean' country in S America.  It's 83,000 sq mi (3rd-smallest country on mainland S America after Uruguay and Suriname) and the only nation in which English is the official language (although the majority speak Creole as a first language.  It was settled by the Dutch before coming under British control in the late 18th century, governed as 'British Guiana', with a mostly plantation-style economy until the 1950s, gaining independence in 1966.

The capital, Georgetown, is on the Atlantic coast on the eastern bank of the Demerara river.  Flying into Cheddi Jagan airport,

and we follow the river into Georgetown, through town as the sun goes down.

Next day, we need to get our Surinamese visa - so to the embassy to fill out forms and leave our passports for a few hours (always a happy feeling in a strange land!)

There are lots of water courses running along main roads, often populated by water lilies

and into town... where we head for lunch and a wander

Passports safely back, time to plan for our day-trip tomorrow to UNESCO heritage Kaieteur Falls.  Opposite our apartment is a bar-restaurant where we enjoy some supper and a cocktail
